Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 7 AIL 0610 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Metaphor Proper

The idea
Where a simile says one thing is like another, a metaphor says it is the other, or speaks of it in the other's terms without announcing a comparison at all. The assertion is stronger and the reader has to detect the transfer rather than being told of it.
In practice
Asserted, not announced.
Where people slip
You must detect the transfer yourself.
