Stress

The idea
Stress is the relative emphasis a syllable carries when spoken. It is relative, not absolute: a syllable is stressed compared with its neighbours. Read the line aloud in your head and listen for where the voice presses, because English metre is built on pressure rather than length.
In practice
Stress is relative to its neighbours.
Where people slip
Read aloud, in your head, always.
