Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 6 AIL 0503 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Meter, as the Anchor Defines It
Captions available
The idea
The glossary gives meter as a term describing the rhythm and measure of a line of poetry. Rhythm is the pattern of stresses; measure is how many units the line runs to. Every metrical name on this exam combines those two ideas, and naming them separately makes the names readable.
In practice
Rhythm plus measure, in one name.
Where people slip
Every metre name has two halves.
