Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 3   AIL 0230 short lesson, about 20 seconds

"Sad" Means Grave

Captions available

The idea

Sonnet thirty speaks of telling over "The sad account of fore-bemoaned moan". Sad carries weight and seriousness as much as sorrow; a sad account is a grave reckoning. The modern sense is not wrong here so much as thin, and the question may test that difference.

In practice

Sad is weighty as well as sorrowful.

Where people slip

Here the modern sense is thin, not false.
