Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 3   AIL 0229 short lesson, about 20 seconds

"Quick" Means Living

Captions available

The idea

Sonnet fifty-five promises that neither "Mars his sword, nor war's quick fire shall burn" the record of the beloved. Quick means living or lively, the sense preserved in the quick and the dead. Speed is a later narrowing and makes the fire merely fast rather than alive.

In practice

Quick fire is living fire.

Where people slip

Speed is the later sense.
