Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 3   AIL 0231 short lesson, about 20 seconds

"Fond" Means Foolish

Captions available

The idea

Sonnet three asks "Or who is he so fond will be the tomb Of his self-love". Fond means foolish or doting, not affectionate. The line accuses, and the modern sense of tender would make the question admiring instead of a rebuke, which reverses the poem's argument.

In practice

Fond is foolish here.

Where people slip

Affection reverses the accusation.
