Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 2   AIL 0138 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Old Spelling and the Long S

Captions available

The idea

Older printing uses a long s that resembles an f, and spells many words differently. Modern editions regularise both, and the exam prints modern spelling. A candidate meeting an unregularised text should read for sound rather than for shape.

In practice

Read for sound, not for shape.

Where people slip

The exam regularises; originals do not.
