Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 2   AIL 0137 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Capitals in the Middle of Sentences

Captions available

The idea

Sheridan capitalises Bachelor, Wife and Grace inside his sentences, following eighteenth-century practice. A capital there marks no emphasis and no personification. Modern printings regularise it away, and the exam prints the regularised form.

In practice

A capital marks nothing in particular.

Where people slip

Do not read emphasis into capitals.
