Increasing, Decreasing, Maximum and Minimum

The idea
A function increases where its graph rises left to right and decreases where it falls. A local maximum is a peak among nearby points; a local minimum, a valley.
In practice
f(x) = −(x − 2)² + 5 rises until x = 2, reaches a maximum of 5, then falls.
Where people slip
Report a maximum as a value, 5, and its location as an input, 2.
