ACT Preparation / Unit 10 ACT 0917 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Vertical Shifts
Captions available
The idea
Adding a constant outside the function, f(x) + k, shifts the graph up by k; subtracting shifts it down.
In practice
f(x) = x² + 3 is the parabola x² moved up 3.
Where people slip
A vertical shift adds k to every output and leaves every input alone, so the range moves and the domain does not.
