Horizontal Shifts

The idea

Replacing x with x − h, giving f(x − h), shifts the graph right by h; f(x + h) shifts it left.

In practice

(x − 4)² is the parabola x² moved right 4, with its vertex at (4, 0).

Where people slip

The sign runs opposite to intuition: minus inside moves right. Ask what input makes the inside zero.
