Biased Language

The idea

Biased language excludes or demeans people by gender, age, ethnicity, class, or physical or mental traits. Neutral terms replace biased ones without changing the meaning.

In practice

"Police officer" for policeman, "mail carrier" for mailman, "flight attendant" for stewardess.

Where people slip

The neutral term is the precise one: police officer names the job, not the person's sex.
