ACT Preparation / Unit 4 ACT 0317 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Keep the Tone Consistent
Captions available
The idea
A passage sets its tone through word choice, and every sentence should keep it. A choice that turns too casual, too formal or too emotional breaks the tone, however grammatical.
In practice
In a calm report on rainfall, "the rain was totally insane" breaks the tone; "the rain was heavy" keeps it.
Where people slip
Hear the tone in the sentences around it.
