ACT Preparation / Unit 4 ACT 0323 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Fewer and Less, Farther and Further
Captions available
The idea
Fewer is for things that can be counted, less for things that cannot. Farther refers to physical distance; further means more, or to a greater extent.
In practice
"Fewer cars, less traffic." "We walked farther than planned and discussed it further at dinner."
Where people slip
If a number can go before the noun, use fewer: three cars, but never three traffic.
