ACT Preparation / Unit 22 ACT 2110 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Chemical Reactions and Conservation of Mass
Captions available
The idea
In a chemical reaction, reactants change into new substances, the products. The total mass stays the same: matter is not detectably gained or lost in a chemical or physical change.
In practice
Burning 10 grams of a fuel with 40 grams of oxygen yields 50 grams of products, counting the gases.
Where people slip
Mass that seems to vanish in burning has escaped as gas.
