ACT Preparation / Unit 15 ACT 1401 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Population and Sample
Captions available
The idea
A population is the whole group a study is about; a sample is the part actually measured. A number describing a population is a parameter; one describing a sample is a statistic.
In practice
Surveying 200 of a city's 50,000 voters uses a sample to estimate a parameter.
Where people slip
A conclusion reaches only as far as the population the sample represents.
