ACT Preparation / Unit 15   ACT 1404 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Bar Graphs and Histograms

Captions available

The idea

A bar graph compares categories; a histogram shows how numerical data are distributed, with bars over equal intervals and heights giving counts or frequencies.

In practice

A histogram of test scores with bars for 60–69, 70–79 and 80–89 shows where most scores fall.

Where people slip

Read the axes and the scale before the bars; a scale that starts above zero exaggerates differences.
