ACT Preparation / Unit 14   ACT 1329 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Amplitude and Period

Captions available

The idea

For y = a sin(bx) or y = a cos(bx), the amplitude is |a|, half the distance from lowest to highest point, and the period is 2π/b, the length of one full cycle.

In practice

y = 3 sin(2x) rises to 3, falls to −3, and repeats every π.

Where people slip

A larger b makes the cycles shorter, not longer.
