Utopian Socialism: Saint-Simon, Owen, Fourier

Captions available

The idea

Before eighteen forty-eight socialism was optimistic, expecting conversion: the Saint-Simonians, engineers harnessing industry for all; Owen's New Lanark, the witness's model mill with schools and pensions, and his short-lived communities; Fourier's phalanxes of exactly sixteen hundred twenty people, with gender equality and oceans of lemonade.

In practice

Utopian is Engels's later word, the anchor says.

Where people slip

Competition as a moral problem, not a threat.
