Louis Blanc wanted reform from above: universal suffrage electing a state that guaranteed work, his National Workshops of eighteen forty-eight. Anarchists rejected the state itself: Proudhon, property is theft, a federation of cooperatives without violence; Bakunin, apocalyptic revolution, loathing state and family alike.
