The idea
German students gathered at the Wartburg in eighteen seventeen; after a nationalist murdered a conservative in nineteen, Metternich issued the Carlsbad Decrees, the witness's name, dissolving fraternities and gagging the press. Mazzini's Young Italy of eighteen thirty-one made the thirties the pivot: Young Germany, Young Ireland followed.
