The idea

The exam hands you inventions and laws out of order and asks which came first. The method is three fixed points: Watt's condenser in seventeen seventy-four, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in eighteen thirty, and the repeal of the Corn Laws in eighteen forty-six. Inventions cluster before the first, laws after the second.

In practice

Place seven events. The power loom: seventeen eighty-seven, after Watt. The Corn Laws: eighteen fifteen, before the railway. Peterloo: eighteen nineteen, after the Corn Laws. The Reform Bill: eighteen thirty-two, two years after the railway. The Factory Act: thirty-three, the next year. The People's Charter: thirty-eight, before repeal. The Mines Act: forty-two, still before repeal. The Ten Hours Act: forty-seven, the year after. Unions legalized: eighteen seventy-one, last. The order reads Watt, loom, Corn Laws, Peterloo, railway, Reform Bill, Factory Act, Charter, Mines Act, repeal, Ten Hours, unions.

Where people slip

The anchor's seventeen sixty-three for Watt and eighteen thirty for the telegraph are early; the witness's seventeen seventy-four and the standard eighteen thirties do not change the order. The Reform Act of eighteen sixty-seven is absent from every source and is not placed.
