Watt's Engine: From Pumping Mines to Turning Wheels

Captions available

The idea

James Watt improved Newcomen's pumping engine with a separate condenser, the witness dates it seventeen seventy-four, and with Boulton manufactured engines from seventy-five. The rotary mechanism turned heat into motion for wheels, not only pumps: coal replacing muscle and water.

In practice

Horsepower, the anchor notes, is Watt's word.

Where people slip

The anchor's seventeen sixty-three is when he began; the patent came later.
