The idea
A peace with Britain and Austria lasted from eighteen-oh-two to late eighteen-oh-five, when a new coalition formed. At Trafalgar in October a British fleet destroyed a larger Franco-Spanish one; the invasion of Britain was abandoned and the invasion army marched into Central Europe.
In practice
The witness: the Peace of Amiens, March eighteen-oh-two, fourteen months.
Where people slip
Britain could never be beaten at sea.
