In eighteen-oh-six the Holy Roman Empire, almost exactly a thousand years old by the anchor's arithmetic, was dissolved and replaced by the Confederation of the Rhine, sixteen German sovereigns under French influence, the witness says, lasting until eighteen thirteen.
