The idea

On the ninth of May nineteen fifty Schuman proposed pooling French and German coal and steel under a common authority, to make war between them materially impossible. The Coal and Steel Community of fifty-one had six members; the Treaty of Rome in fifty-seven made the Common Market.

In practice

"Europe will not be made all at once."

Where people slip

Witness-built; the anchor starts at fifty-seven.
