Western Civilization II / Unit 18 WC2 1719 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Bandung, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Empire Strikes Back
Captions available
The idea
At Bandung in nineteen fifty-five African and Asian states met without the superpowers, and the Non-Aligned Movement grew past a hundred members. The boom drew guest workers from the former colonies into Europe; families followed by the mid-sixties, and multi-ethnic Europe met racism and official silence.
In practice
"The empire strikes back", the phrase the anchor borrows.
Where people slip
"Third world" dates from fifty-two, not Bandung.
