Captions available

The idea

In late May over three hundred thousand British and French troops were lifted from Dunkirk by navy and fishing boats. France surrendered on the twenty-second of June. Germany occupied the north; Pétain's Vichy regime ran camps, passed anti-Semitic laws and fought Britain at sea.

In practice

Wars are not won by evacuations, Churchill said.

Where people slip

The anchor's "state of war with Britain" was hostilities, undeclared.
