Socialism in One Country: The Great Turn and Collectivization

Captions available

The idea

Stalin's Socialism in One Country meant industrial buildup at home before world revolution. The Great Turn of nineteen twenty-eight ended the NEP; collectivization from nineteen twenty-nine forced peasants into collective farms under quotas set unachievably high. Kulaks, prosperous peasants few in number, became the scapegoats.

In practice

Peasant and land unbound, the anchor says.

Where people slip

A kulak: twenty-five to forty acres with hired labor.
