The idea
Germany, Austria and then the Ottomans were the Central Powers; Britain, France and Russia the Entente, joined by Italy in nineteen fifteen. Crowds expected the troops home by Christmas. The socialist parties voted for war credits; the radicals who refused split off as communists.
