Captions available
The idea
Charlemagne, seven sixty-eight to eight fourteen, fought forty years to convert Germans by force and to loot. In seven seventy-three the pope asked him to become king of the Lombards, an unprecedented kingship across peoples that set the precedent for crowns passing between clans.
In practice
His brother Carloman's sons dispossessed and murdered.
Where people slip
Conversion by force is the record.
