Captions available

The idea

After eight fourteen the empire was partitioned, at Verdun in eight forty-three on the witness, among Louis the Pious's sons. East Francia became Germany's origin. Otto I was crowned emperor in nine sixty-two, and the Empire outlived Charlemagne's blood.

In practice

Verdun is witness-supplied; the anchor describes the division unnamed.

Where people slip

The Empire's title passed to a non-Carolingian line. Learn nine sixty-two.
