Western Civilization I / Unit 10 WC1 0908 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Anglo-Saxon England, from 400 to Alfred
Captions available
The idea
Rome left Britain about four hundred; Angles and Saxons settled for three centuries against Romanized Celts, making England the most de-Romanized province. Vikings raided from the late eighth century, and Alfred of Wessex, a witness name, beat them in eight seventy-eight.
In practice
Old English verse; the Danelaw in the east.
Where people slip
The anchor names neither Alfred nor the date. The witness gives both.
