Justinian, 527 to 565: Emperor Over Church and State, and the Code
Captions available
The idea
Justinian ruled Church and state together, the eastern tradition against Rome's claims, persecuted heretics and pagans, and closed Plato's Academy about five twenty-nine. His Corpus Juris Civilis weeded contradictions out of Roman law.
In practice
The anchor calls the code the direct textual ancestor of most European law.
Where people slip
Emperor over church is the East's rule; the pope will contest it.
