The idea
Belisarius took Vandal Africa in five thirty-three. Italy took twenty years and was devastated; the anchor's thesis is that this invasion, not four seventy-six, crippled Italy. In five forty-two plague killed half of Constantinople, the anchor's figure.

Trade between East and West severed; peace bought from Persia yearly.
