Western Civilization I / Unit 2 WC1 0120 short lesson, about 20 seconds
The Hebrews: Sources, Covenant, Canaan
Captions available
The idea
The anchor's frame is secular scholarship: the Hebrew Bible was written centuries after the events it tells. Tradition gives Abraham about nineteen hundred, Moses about thirteen hundred, and the Covenant with Yahweh. Archaeology suggests a Levantine origin.
In practice
The strongest outside evidence: Merneptah's stele naming Israel in Canaan, twelve oh seven.
Where people slip
The tradition's account is the tradition's; the stele is the record.
