Western Civilization I / Unit 12 WC1 1122 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Sequencing the Crises, 1206 to 1453
The idea
The exam gives four late-medieval events and asks their order, and three crises overlap. The method is one spine of Church dates with the others hung on it: Unam Sanctam thirteen oh two, Avignon thirteen oh nine, the Schism thirteen seventy-eight, Constance fourteen seventeen. Before the spine lie the Mongols; through it run the war and the plague.
In practice
Hang seven events. Chinggis elected in twelve oh six and Hungary invaded in twelve forty-one: before Unam Sanctam. The Great Famine of thirteen fifteen: between Avignon's start and the war. The war's start in thirteen thirty-seven and Crecy in thirteen forty-six: after the famine, before the plague. The plague of thirteen forty-eight: after Crecy. The Jacquerie of thirteen fifty-eight: after the plague, before the Schism. Agincourt in fourteen fifteen and Hus's burning the same year: during Constance. Joan in fourteen twenty-nine: after Constance. Read: Chinggis, Hungary, Unam Sanctam, Avignon, famine, war, Crecy, plague, Jacquerie, Schism, Constance and Agincourt and Hus, Joan, fourteen fifty-three.
Where people slip
The trap is the two Schisms and the two Poitiers. Ten fifty-four split East from West; thirteen seventy-eight split pope from pope. Seven thirty-two stopped the Arabs; thirteen fifty-six lost a French king to England. Check the century before answering.
