Captions available

The idea

Peter Abelard, ten seventy-nine to eleven forty-two, applied reason to faith at Paris and angered the hierarchy. Universities grew from cathedral schools as guilds: Bologna chartered in eleven fifty-eight, Paris by about twelve hundred, the Sorbonne a college within it from twelve fifty-seven.

In practice

Degrees, exams, robes, the trivium and quadrivium.

Where people slip

The anchor calls the Sorbonne the university. It was a college.
