Western Civilization I / Unit 2   WC1 0101 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Nile and Why Egypt Was Stable

Captions available

The idea

The Nile floods predictably in late summer and leaves silt. The anchor links that predictability to Egypt's stability over thousands of years, against Mesopotamia's capricious rivers. Kemet, the Black Land, was a strip ten to twenty miles wide.

In practice

Upper Egypt upriver in the south, Lower Egypt in the delta.

Where people slip

The anchor's three times Mesopotamia's harvest is its figure, attributed.
