Western Civilization I / Unit 2   WC1 0103 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Narmer, Djoser, and the God-King of the Old Kingdom

Captions available

The idea

Narmer united Upper and Lower Egypt about thirty-one hundred B.C.E. From the third dynasty the king ruled as a god keeping ma'at, the sacred order of the world. Djoser raised the first pyramid about twenty-six sixty.

In practice

Scribes, hieroglyphs, and a surplus spent on temples and tombs, not conquest.

Where people slip

Narmer's date rests on the anchor alone; the witnesses' period dates differ. Say about.
