The JRC Leadership Triangle

The idea

The JRC Leadership Triangle, the diagram at the front of The Lost ARC, puts the whole framework on one page; the book calls it a map, not a proprietary model.

In practice

Step one: find the centre, the five-level motivational hierarchy from subsistence at the base to flourishing at the apex, conditions a person can rise into or fall back from within a single week. Step two: read the outer triangle, autonomy, relatedness and competence, the envelope that must hold at every level. Step three: read the two vertical arrows, green rising toward trust and red falling toward distrust, because the trust climate moves people up or down the hierarchy. Step four: read the leader's role below, pointing toward the Activator or the Inhibitor, with Active Listening deciding which way it should point for this person now.

Where people slip

Even a person in subsistence still needs all three; they lack the bandwidth to pursue them, which is why motivating someone before relieving their pressure usually fails.
