The Habits Under Every Case
The idea
Beneath the differences between the six cases, the same few habits appear in every one.
In practice
Learn the habits, in the order a case uses them. First, preparation: the preference card, inspected packages, checked indicators, and equipment tested before the patient arrives. Second, verification: the patient identified, the time out with everyone stopped, and the implants and equipment confirmed. Third, sterile technique: the field kept in view, breaks said aloud and fixed, and surgical conscience when no one is watching. Fourth, accounting: counts aloud together, specimens labelled and confirmed, and implants recorded. Fifth, communication: speaking up, structured handoffs, and the sign-out. Sixth, turnover: sharps contained, instruments prepared for decontamination, and the room cleaned for the next patient.
Where people slip
These habits matter because they are done every time, not only when a case seems risky. The cases that went smoothly were not lucky; they were the habits working.
