The idea
Electrosurgical units can be set to cut tissue or to coagulate it, by changing the electrical waveform.
In practice
Cutting divides tissue with little spread of heat; coagulation seals small vessels; surgeons choose the mode and setting for the task.
Where people slip
The surgeon or circulating nurse sets the generator; the setting is stated aloud and recorded as facility policy requires.
