Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 23 TSC 552 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Mechanical Hemostasis
The idea
Mechanical hemostasis controls bleeding by physically closing or compressing vessels, without heat.
In practice
Learn the main methods in order. First, pressure, applied with sponges or a hand, slows bleeding and lets the body's clotting work. Second, hemostatic clamps grasp a bleeding vessel and hold it closed. Third, ligatures, ties of suture, are placed around a clamped vessel to close it permanently. Fourth, clips, metal or absorbable, close vessels or ducts, in open or laparoscopic surgery. Fifth, packing with gauze applies pressure where bleeding is widespread or hard to reach.
Where people slip
Each method needs supplies ready on the field. During bleeding, the scrub person has suction, sponges, clamps and ties prepared in that order, so the surgeon never waits, and every sponge or pad used for pressure is tracked like any other counted item.
