The idea
The needle holder is matched to both the needle's size and the depth of the wound.
In practice
Fine needles need small, fine-jawed holders; heavy needles need sturdy holders; deep wounds need longer instruments.
Where people slip
A loose grip lets the needle rotate in the tissue, and an oversized holder can deform it.
