Structural mobility is movement caused by change in the economy itself rather than by anything individuals did, moving many people at once in the same direction.
In practice
When an industry contracts, people lose position together without any change in their conduct.
Where people slip
Students often read mobility stories as individual achievement, forgetting structural mobility runs downward as readily as upward.
