The idea
Every society that has been measured is stratified, and an open class system produces layers as reliably as a closed one; permitting movement between layers is not the absence of layers.
In practice
Wealth, schooling, health, and lifespan all sort by position in societies that describe themselves as classless.
Where people slip
The belief survives because class is rarely named aloud, not because it stopped operating.
