Sanctions
Captions available
The idea
A sanction is the response a group gives to behavior, rewarding conformity to its norms and penalizing departure from them.
In practice
A held door earns thanks; cutting a queue earns a stare. Both are sanctions doing the same work.
Where people slip
Sanction sounds like punishment, but a reward is a sanction too — the everyday meaning of the word is the trap here.
