Social Control

Captions available

The idea

Social control is the set of mechanisms by which a society encourages conformity to its norms, running from a raised eyebrow to imprisonment.

In practice

Most social control is informal, immediate, and delivered by whoever happens to be present.

Where people slip

Formal control is visible and rare; informal control does nearly all of the work.
