Folkways

The idea
Folkways are norms of routine and convention whose violation is treated as rude or odd rather than as wrong.
In practice
Wearing beach clothes to a job interview breaks a folkway; onlookers are uncomfortable, and nothing further follows.
Where people slip
Weak sanctions do not make folkways trivial — they organize most of daily conduct, even though violations are common and cheap.
